Laura Hickey – Naturopath
I’ve been practicing as a clinical Naturopath for 6 years. I have always practised in my own clinic, but have also gained new knowledge and experiences as I’ve worked in other clinics. Initially I practiced at the East Fremantle Infant and Health Centre, this is a space run by home birthing midwives and it’s where I initially began my interest in infant and child health. I practiced in a multi modality chiropractic clinic in Beechboro for about a year, which gave me good insight into how a large clinic works. From 2015-2017 I worked for a Natural Allergy Treatment clinic and learnt a lot about allergies resulting in asthma, hayfever, skin conditions and digestive problems as well as autoimmune. At this clinic we engaged in techniques which enabled us to help alleviate food and airbourne stressors and I was often amazed by the results. In my clinic I am able to muscle test for food and airbourne stressors and my combination of Naturopathic work and Kinesiology can result in huge improvements in allergy like symptoms. Within my own clinic over the years my focus seemed to move towards digestive health and thyroid – especially Hashimoto’s. In 2017 my daughter Rose was born with Down Syndrome, this shifted my focus to once again back to infant and child health and inspired me to become a Trisomy 21 specialist.
In 2015 I completed my Diploma in Kinesiology. The combination of Kinesiology and Naturopathy enables me to integrate physiological and emotional energetic components and work holistically on health and well being. Muscle testing is an incredible tool which I utilise often in my clinic.
I’ve always had an interest in herbs and natural health. Within the clinic I focus on educating my clients about their bodies and the particular disorder or disease that is causing the problem. Knowledge is power, with better understanding comes a better ability to take care of your health in the long term. I endeavour not to be heavy handed with supplements and herbs, however certain ailments will disappear much more quickly if they are hit hard with an intensive course of supplements and herbs. Other ailments only need a couple of dietary changes in order to clear up.
Within this time I have narrowed my areas of speciality down to -
Infant and child health
Digestive health including
Autoimmune conditions – especially thyroid and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis
Implementing GAPS and Specific Carbohydrate diet program
Female Reproduction and hormones
I like working with chronic conditions and as the mother of a child who has Down Syndrome I see how much benefit diet, supplementation and herbal support can have when used in the right way. I also know all about taking my baby for regular blood tests, multiple appointments and never ending research and facebook forums. So if I’m working with babies and children I know where you’re at. As a Naturopath my passion lies in food as medicine, and good food in general, as well as herbal medicine and educating clients about health and how their body works in relation to their condition.
Good health is a journey, a fun and exciting one. However I understand that change can be scary and it can be difficult. The energy and vitality you gain from being healthy is a great reward.
Ten years of experience working as a cook in the restaurant and catering industry mean that my passion for food as medicine extends into delicious healthy food from the kitchen. I understand that good food and healthy eating is about taste, nutrition and flexibility. It is about sharing and enjoying food with friends and family and feeling great physically and emotionally afterwards.
My children and I have traveled on this naturopathic journey together. Kayden now 12 does not blink an eye at having to drink a herbal tonic or take two or three supplements when he is sick. He has experienced the benefits of natural medicine and although it doesn’t always taste the best, he knows that the results are worth it. Rose my daughter has been on high dose nutritional supplements and antioxidants since she was about 6 months old, so I’m a pro at pulling apart capsules and administering supplements without much fuss (at this stage – 14 months disguised in organic fruit purees). As an Aunty and friend to many mum’s I have learnt that not all children realise the benefits of herbal tonics or have the ability to swallow tablets so I have spent some time investing in child friendly supplements and concocting child friendly tonics. I understand that you don’t want to spend $20-$30 on something your child will never take.
Female Reproductive Disorders
You can’t specialise in preconception without knowing a lot about everything female reproductive. I have a thorough knowledge of the female reproductive system, the hormones involved and the many ways this system can go wrong. Hormones and reproductive issues can often be cleared up with dietary, herbal and supplemental support. Fremantle Natural Health can help restore balance to women suffering from;
Dietary Changes such as GAPS and Specific carbohydrate may improve conditions such as
We live in an era of extremely poor digestive health.This may be due to our modern diets, high use of antibiotics, stressful lifestyles, super clean living environments, not being breast fed at all or for long enough, fed too early as infants, caesarian births, fed too many grain based foods as infants. Some of us have been eating foods that irritate our guts for years. In short our modern world is not good for our ancient bodies. If our digestive system is not functioning optimally then the best food in the world will not nurture it. A good healthy digestive system is essential to a healthy body and mind. Digestive ailments I can help with at Fremantle Natural Health include;
Although I do live a healthy lifestyle, I’m not perfect. Life is about experience and moderation. Detoxing is a great way to get your health back on track and is also a great way to experience or remind ourselves how good it feels to be clean and clear in body and mind. Detoxing is also a wonderful way to access good health and learn healthy eating habits for those who aren’t quiet sure where to start with health and a healthy life. Group detoxes which I run for 4 weeks a few times a year are also a great way to meet new people and learn to socialise without alcohol, coffee or cake.
I see a lot of autoimmunity in my clinic and therefore have developed the skills, knowledge and experience to help regulate the immune system and reduce the negative symptoms associated with these conditions.
